A neuromodulator is a purified form of botulinum toxin used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily reduce the activity of a selected muscle or gland. It works locally, allowing physicians to address expression-related lines, excessive sweating or jaw muscle overactivity with planned injections. This is the active molecule behind prescription products patients may already recognize. Because these medicines are regulated and require an individualized medical assessment, their commercial names are not used here. Botulinum toxin is among the most extensively studied and versatile molecules in aesthetic medicine. At Centre Esthétique Montréal clinics, it is used for three treatments: anti-wrinkle injections, hyperhidrosis treatment and jawline slimming. Every neuromodulator treatment is performed exclusively by a licensed physician.

A neuromodulator works by temporarily interrupting the nerve signal that instructs a muscle to contract. At the junction where the nerve communicates with the muscle, botulinum toxin reduces release of the chemical messenger needed for muscle activity. The treated muscle relaxes gradually, rather than immediately, so changes in movement and expression lines typically develop over several days.
The effect remains local to the injection sites and is temporary. Nerve endings recover their signalling function, so muscle movement returns over three to six months. Applied to sweat glands, the same mechanism reduces nerve signals that activate sweat production, helping decrease excessive underarm sweating. Dosage is measured in units and adjusted to the strength of the muscle treated. A licensed physician determines units and injection sites after assessing anatomy, goals and muscle strength. This assessment supports an individualized treatment plan.

Preparation begins with a consultation with a licensed physician, including review of medical history, medications and treatment goals. The physician assesses the muscles or area concerned and confirms suitability. Follow guidance on what to avoid before the appointment, including medications or supplements, only with physician approval.
Your physician cleans the treatment area before placing a small number of injections with a fine needle. They assess facial anatomy or the glands involved, then identify precise injection sites based on muscle movement and treatment goals. Most treatment sessions take approximately 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the area and number of sites treated. Sensation is usually brief, often described as small pinches.
Most people return to normal activities immediately. For 24 hours, avoid vigorous exercise and rubbing the treated area while following physician guidance. Results typically begin within several days and are fully developed at two weeks. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every three to six months to maintain results.
